Spring allergens drive a predictable surge in nasal congestion, sinus pressure, ear fullness, and throat irritation. At ENTOne, March marks the beginning of one of our busiest clinical seasons. Because these symptoms closely mimic a prolonged cold, many patients delay care – often until a more significant infection has taken hold. Knowing when to manage symptoms at home and when to seek evaluation makes a meaningful clinical difference.

Recognizing the Signs

Tree and grass pollen trigger nasal mucosal inflammation that can affect the sinuses, ears, and throat simultaneously. Key indicators include:

Nasal congestion or rhinorrhea beyond 10 -14 days

Sneezing, nasal or ocular pruritus, and postnasal drip

Facial pressure or pain in the cheeks, periorbital region, or forehead

Aural fullness, autophony, or fluctuating hearing

Pharyngitis, chronic throat clearing, or nocturnal cough

Symptoms that persist beyond two weeks, recur frequently, or impair sleep or daily function warrant a specialist evaluation rather than continued symptomatic management.

Daily Practices That Help

Saline nasal irrigation. Once or twice daily rinses mechanically clear pollen, particulates, and mucus. Use distilled, boiled and cooled, or sterile-filtered water.

Hydration. Six to eight glasses of water daily support mucociliary clearance and make mucus easier to clear.

Humidification. A cool-mist humidifier relieves mucosal dryness – keep the unit clean and maintain indoor humidity below 50% to prevent mold growth.

Allergen reduction at home. Close windows on high-pollen days; shower and change clothes after time outdoors; launder bedding weekly in hot water (≥130°F).

When to Call the Office

Contact ENTOne if patients experience:

Sinus pain or pressure lasting more than a few days without improvement

Thick, discolored nasal discharge that doesn’t resolve

Recurrent acute sinusitis

Hoarseness, voice changes, or pharyngeal pain for three or more weeks

Persistent aural fullness, hearing changes, or dizziness

A thorough ENT evaluation rules out chronic rhinosinusitis, nasal polyposis, septal deviation, and laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) – all of which can present similarly to seasonal allergies and all of which benefit from early, targeted treatment.

March Wellness Challenge

Consider building these three habits for one week:

Saline nasal rinse: once daily for 7 days.

Hydration – one full glass of water with each meal.

Active recovery – a 10-minute outdoor walk on low-pollen days, followed by a clothing change and nasal rinse.

Small, consistent habits this month support healthier sinuses through the entire spring season.

How Sinus/Allergy Issues Impact Sleep Quality

“That’s right. Sinus/allergy issues can impact the quality of your sleep,” says ENTOne team member Savannah Shannon, PA-C, MMSc, Physician Assistant.

“I seek to keep each patient’s individual goals and overall health at the center of our conversation. I want my patients to continue pursuing the things they enjoy and maintaining the quality of their sleep, while simultaneously prioritizing their health through a proactive, rather than reactive, approach whenever possible.”

“For example, if we can optimize the nose and sinuses with a maintenance regimen, such as nasal irrigation and various nasal sprays, then I may be able to prevent the severity or even the occurrence of sinus/allergy symptoms, while minimizing the impact on a patient’s sleep.”

Question: How did you become interested in healthcare?

Savannah: I have always known I wanted a healthcare career. Science and medicine have been passions of mine for as long as I can remember, and becoming a PA has allowed me to make a meaningful impact in my patients’ lives.

A personal experience as an ENT patient inspired me to enter this field. I’m committed to creating that same positive impact for my patients through strong rapport, medical management, and hands-on procedures.

Before joining the ENT world, I worked in adult Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine. Having this background gives me a unique perspective on ENT conditions and potentially associated comorbidities.

Question: Can you give an example of the proactive approach you encourage patients to take?

Savannah: I seek to keep each patient’s individual goals and overall health at the center of our conversation. I want my patients to continue pursuing the things they enjoy while simultaneously prioritizing their health through a proactive, rather than reactive, approach whenever possible.

For example, if we can optimize the nose and sinuses with a maintenance regimen, such as nasal irrigation and various nasal sprays, then I may be able to prevent the severity or even the occurrence of sinus infections, rather than waiting to start therapies until someone is sick.

Question: What do you enjoy most about ENTOne?

Savannah: I enjoy the office culture and patients at ENTOne. Building relationships is what I enjoy most in life, so I invest myself in the people I surround myself with.

February is American Heart Month, a national campaign dedicated to raising awareness about cardiovascular disease – the leading cause of death in the US – and encouraging preventive, heart-healthy habits. This month, we’re highlighting a critical but often overlooked connection: sleep apnea and heart health.

While many associate sleep apnea with snoring and fatigue, its effects on your cardiovascular system can be serious and far-reaching.

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea causes repeated pauses in breathing during sleep. These pauses can last from seconds to over a minute and may occur hundreds of times per night. In obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the most common type, relaxed throat muscles block the airway.

The Sleep Apnea-Heart Health Connection

When breathing stops during sleep, your body experiences changes that directly stress your cardiovascular system:

Oxygen Deprivation: Each pause drops blood oxygen levels, triggering a stress response that forces your heart to work harder. Over time, this repeated strain damages the heart and blood vessels.

Blood Pressure Spikes: The body’s fight-or-flight response causes sudden blood pressure surges during each event. These repeated spikes can lead to sustained hypertension – approximately 50% of people with sleep apnea also have high blood pressure.

Irregular Heart Rhythms: Sleep apnea significantly increases the risk of arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation. People with untreated sleep apnea are four times more likely to develop AFib.

Increased Risk of Heart Disease: People with untreated moderate to severe sleep apnea face a 2-to 3-times higher risk of coronary artery disease, plus an increased likelihood of heart attack, heart failure, and stroke.

Warning Signs

Common symptoms include loud snoring, gasping during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, difficulty concentrating, and irritability. If you have these symptoms along with risk factors like obesity or a family history of sleep apnea, seek evaluation.

Taking the Next Step

If you suspect sleep apnea, especially if you have existing heart conditions or cardiovascular risk factors, getting diagnosed should be a priority. The team at ENTOne is available to answer any questions you may have about the health of your ears, nose, and throat. Contact ENTOne to schedule an appointment.

The Common Cold

Colds develop gradually and typically affect your upper respiratory system. Symptoms include a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, a mild sore throat, a cough, and slight body aches. Fever is rare or low-grade. Symptoms usually peak within 3-5 days and resolve within 7-10 days.

The Flu

The flu hits hard and fast, affecting your entire body. Recognizing these symptoms early – like high fever and severe aches – can help you seek prompt treatment. If you feel like you’ve been “hit by a truck,” it’s likely the flu.

Sinus Infection

A sinus infection occurs when the nasal passages become inflamed, and the sinuses fill with fluid. If you notice thick nasal discharge, facial pain, or symptoms lasting more than 10 days, it’s essential to seek medical advice to stay in control of your health.

When to See an ENT Specialist

See an ENT specialist if you experience symptoms lasting more than 10 days, severe facial pain, a high fever, vision changes, worsening symptoms after improvement, or recurring sinus infections.

Treatment Approaches

Colds: Rest, hydration, over-the-counter decongestants, saline nasal rinses

Flu: Antiviral medications (within 48 hours), rest, fluids, fever reducers, annual flu vaccine

Sinus Infections: Saline irrigation, decongestants, antibiotics (if bacterial), nasal sprays, advanced treatments for chronic cases

Prevention Tips

Wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your face, get adequate sleep, stay hydrated, get your annual flu vaccine, use a humidifier, and treat allergies promptly.

The Bottom Line

Colds, flu, and sinus infections require different treatments. Pay attention to symptom patterns, timing, and severity. If symptoms are severe or persistent, contact ENTOne to schedule an appointment with our experienced ENT physicians.

We know it’s not easy, especially when you’re navigating challenges like hearing loss or swallowing difficulties. At ENTOne, we see you, we appreciate you, and we’re here to help.

When Grandma Keeps Saying “What?”

If your loved one is constantly asking you to repeat yourself or cranking up the TV volume to levels that shake the walls, they might be dealing with hearing loss. It’s super common—about one in three seniors experience it—but that doesn’t make it any less frustrating for everyone involved.

Here are some simple ways to make communication easier:

Keep your face visible when you talk so they can pick up on visual cues

Turn off background noise, like the TV, before having essential conversations

Speak clearly (but don’t shout—that actually makes it harder to understand)

And most importantly, be patient. Your loved one is probably just as frustrated as you are.

If hearing aids have been prescribed, help make sure they’re actually being worn and working correctly. Modern hearing aids can be life-changing, and the ENTOne audiologists are happy to help troubleshoot any issues.

Mealtime Worries? Let’s Talk About Swallowing

Swallowing difficulties can be scary. If you notice your loved one coughing during meals, avoiding certain foods, or losing weight, it’s time to pay attention. These issues can lead to serious problems like pneumonia or choking, but there’s a lot we can do to keep mealtimes safe.

Quick safety tips:

Make sure they’re sitting up straight during meals and stay seated for at least 30 minutes after eating

Serve smaller portions more frequently rather than three big meals

Give them plenty of time to eat without rushing

And turn off distractions so they can focus on chewing and swallowing

Depending on the severity, you might need to adjust food textures (softer foods or even pureed) or thicken liquids. We can connect you with specialists who’ll create a safe eating plan tailored to your loved one’s needs.

Important: If you notice frequent coughing during meals, unexplained weight loss, or recurring respiratory infections, give us a call. And of course, if there’s an emergency involving choking, call 911 immediately.

You Matter Too

Here’s something caregivers don’t hear enough: you need to take care of yourself. It’s not selfish—it’s essential. Accept help when it’s offered. Connect with other caregivers who get it. Keep up with your own doctor appointments. Take time for exercise or your hobbies. And please, celebrate the small wins along the way.

We’re On Your Team

At ENTOne, we believe in treating the whole family, not just the patient. We’ll take the time to answer your questions, show you helpful techniques, and make sure you feel confident in your caregiving role.

This National Family Caregivers Month, we want you to know how much we appreciate everything you do. If your loved one is struggling with hearing loss or swallowing difficulties, let’s work together to make things easier and safer for everyone.

Give us a call—we’re here to help.

New evidence-based guidelines reveal how hearing care professionals can break the cycle between untreated hearing loss and cognitive decline.

The Hearing Loss-Cognitive Decline Cycle

Untreated hearing loss triggers a harmful progression: reduced auditory input, communication difficulties, social withdrawal, isolation, and loneliness, and accelerated cognitive decline. This cycle threatens not just hearing, but overall cognitive vitality in older adults.

Why the Brain Can Recover

The brain remains plastic throughout life. Key regions controlling executive function and memory can be strengthened with proper intervention, allowing the brain to “snap back” when given targeted support for challenging listening environments.

The Holistic Approach

Optimal outcomes require more than amplification. Holistic hearing care combines medical intervention with social prescribing – connecting clients to community activities and support that address social, emotional, and unmet needs beyond hearing loss.

Clinical Framework

The guideline offers client-centered management goals for people with hearing loss and multiple conditions who may be at risk for cognitive decline:

Recognize clients showing cognitive challenges

Optimize audibility and processing through evidence-based strategies

Promote overall auditory wellness with comprehensive support

Practical case studies demonstrate real-world application of these goals.

Excellence in Hearing Care: Our Commitment to Your Health

Quality hearing care requires ongoing professional expertise and support. The ENTOne team of Doctors of Audiology provides comprehensive care that supports not just your hearing, but your overall cognitive health and well-being.

Next Steps

The team at ENTOne is available to answer any questions you may have about the health of your ears, nose, and throat. Contact ENTOne to schedule an appointment.

Disclaimer: This is general information and not a substitute for professional medical advice. All advice and suggestions offered via the website or newsletters should be discussed with a physician before implementation. Always consult a physician for specific guidance, especially if you have pre-existing conditions. SurgOne, PC, and ENTOne PC are not liable for any adverse reactions that may occur by implementing advice or suggestions that appear here.

Medical-grade ear piercing offers several advantages over traditional methods, particularly in terms of safety, hygiene, and long-term outcomes. Here are the key benefits.

1. Sterile Environment and Equipment

Trained healthcare professionals perform medical ear piercings in a sterile, single-use equipment environment. This significantly reduces the risk of infection compared to retail or mall-based piercings that often use reusable piercing guns.

2. Reduced Risk of Allergic Reactions

Medical-grade earrings are typically made from hypoallergenic materials, including medical-grade plastics and titanium. These materials are free from nickel, a common allergen, helping to prevent allergic contact dermatitis and other skin reactions.

3. Minimized Pain and Trauma

During the procedure, healthcare professionals can apply topical numbing cream to reduce discomfort. They also use precise techniques that minimize tissue trauma.

4. Lower Risk of Complications

Piercings performed by professionals trained in wound care and sterile technique significantly reduce the likelihood of complications such as infections, keloids, or improper placement.

5. Better Healing Outcomes

Medical-grade studs are often designed with a slightly thicker profile than standard earrings, which helps create a more stable piercing channel. This design can facilitate easier switching of earrings later and reduce the chance of re-injury or infection during the healing process.

6. Tailored Aftercare Guidance

ENTOne provides detailed aftercare instructions and may offer specialized cleaning solutions or follow-up care to ensure optimal healing and minimize post-procedure issues.

7. Ideal for Children

Medical professionals particularly recommend ear piercing for infants and young children, as it provides a controlled and safe environment, minimizing the risk of complications during this sensitive developmental stage.

Questions About Medical Grade Ear Piercing?

The team at ENTOne is available to answer any questions you may have about medical-grade ear piercing. Contact ENTOne to schedule an appointment.

Disclaimer: This is general information and not a substitute for professional medical advice.

Our team at ENTOne specializes in ear, nose, and throat care for patients of all ages. While this is our primary focus, we recognize the importance of our patients’ overall health and well-being.

For most of us, sunlight is significant for our health. Here in Colorado, we enjoy around 250 days of sunshine each year. Due to the state’s elevation, the sunlight here tends to be more intense. Let’s explore how we can benefit from Colorado’s abundant sunshine.

Sunlight is vital in producing vitamin D, which is essential for maintaining a robust immune system. A healthy immune system is crucial for fighting illnesses and infections, ranging from mild ailments like the common cold to more serious conditions.

The immune system, ear, nose, and throat health are closely interconnected. The ENT system serves as the body’s first line of defense against infections, and the immune system plays a crucial role in fighting off disease-causing agents like viruses, bacteria, fungi, or parasites.

How the Immune System Supports ENT Health

Filtering and Trapping – The nasal passages filter dust, allergens, and pathogens, while mucus traps bacteria and viruses.

Tonsils and Adenoids – These lymph nodes in the throat identify and attack harmful invaders.

Antibodies and White Cells – The immune system produces antibodies and white cells to destroy trapped pathogens in the nose and throat.

Allergies – The immune system can overreact to allergens, causing inflammation and symptoms like nasal congestion, sneezing, and runny nose.

How ENT Issues Can Impact the Immune System

Chronic Infections – Frequent ENT infections can weaken the immune system.

Allergies – Allergic reactions can cause inflammation and disrupt the normal functioning of the ENT system, potentially making individuals more susceptible to infections.

Stress—If you suffer from chronic ENT issues such as nasal congestion or loss of hearing, your body goes into “stress mode,” activating the sympathetic nervous system and the HPA axis. This leads to the release of the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol. If these hormones are present often, they become a consistent contributor to inflammation and immune system drama, leading to even more inflammation in a “fussy” ENT system. Inflammation in the ENT system leads to persistent problems like sinusitis and hearing loss.

Enjoying Colorado’s abundant sunshine can significantly enhance our overall health, especially regarding the immune system’s connection to ear, nose, and throat wellness. Adopting healthy lifestyle practices, maintaining proper hygiene, and prioritizing habits that boost the immune system—such as getting adequate sunlight exposure—can strengthen your body’s defenses and lower the risk of developing infections in these areas. Remember, a proactive approach to immune health protects your well-being against infectious challenges.

A nutritious diet is vital for overall health, but did you know that nutrition also plays a role in your immune system and the health of your ears, nose, and throat?

What you eat and drink directly impacts the health of your ears, nose, and throat and their respective abilities to fight infections.

Certain nutrients support and maintain ENT health more than others. There are essential food groups and nutrients that can support your immune system and the structures of these organs. Some foods can even reduce inflammation should an infection set in.

Tips for a Healthy ENT-Supporting Diet

Eat various foods—Consuming multiple fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein sources ensures you get a wide range of nutrients.

Choose whole, unprocessed foods – Focus on eating whole, unprocessed foods whenever possible.

Cook at home – Preparing your meals lets you control the ingredients and portion sizes.

Read nutrition labels – Nutrition labels on packaged foods help you make informed choices about the foods you buy.

Stay hydrated – Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Staying hydrated is especially important in Colorado’s dry climate.

Practice good hygiene – Wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs that can cause infections.

Get enough sleep – Adequate sleep is essential for immune function. Most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep per night.

Manage stress – Stress can weaken the immune system, so find healthy ways to manage stress.

Consult with a healthcare professional at ENTOne. We are here to answer your questions or address your concerns about your ENT health. Contact us to schedule an appointment.

Can Certain Diets Improve ENT Health?

Today, little evidence suggests that some popular diets, such as low-carb or detox diets, offer little if any specific benefits for ENT health. A balanced diet with fresh, whole foods provides the best protection and support for a healthy ENT system.

Dietary Adjustments for Enhanced ENT Health

Mindful changes to your diet can positively impact your ear, nose, and throat health. By incorporating specific dietary habits, you can bolster the well-being of your ENT system and experience a range of benefits.

Food For Thought

Probiotics—Consider incorporating probiotic-rich foods or supplements into your diet. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that support gut health and immune function, indirectly benefiting your ENT system.

Specific Nutrients – Focus on consuming foods rich in nutrients that support ENT health. These include vitamin C, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Allergies – If you have food allergies or sensitivities, identify and avoid trigger foods to prevent inflammation and ENT symptoms.

By making these simple yet impactful dietary changes, you can proactively support your ENT health and overall well-being. Consult your ENTOne healthcare professional or registered dietitian for personalized guidance and nutritional recommendations tailored to your needs. Remember, a well-nourished body is better equipped to maintain optimal ENT health and function.
