New evidence-based guidelines reveal how hearing care professionals can break the cycle between untreated hearing loss and cognitive decline.

The Hearing Loss-Cognitive Decline Cycle

Untreated hearing loss triggers a harmful progression: reduced auditory input, communication difficulties, social withdrawal, isolation, and loneliness, and accelerated cognitive decline. This cycle threatens not just hearing, but overall cognitive vitality in older adults.

Why the Brain Can Recover

The brain remains plastic throughout life. Key regions controlling executive function and memory can be strengthened with proper intervention, allowing the brain to “snap back” when given targeted support for challenging listening environments.

The Holistic Approach

Optimal outcomes require more than amplification. Holistic hearing care combines medical intervention with social prescribing – connecting clients to community activities and support that address social, emotional, and unmet needs beyond hearing loss.

Clinical Framework

The guideline offers client-centered management goals for people with hearing loss and multiple conditions who may be at risk for cognitive decline:

Recognize clients showing cognitive challenges

Optimize audibility and processing through evidence-based strategies

Promote overall auditory wellness with comprehensive support

Practical case studies demonstrate real-world application of these goals.

Excellence in Hearing Care: Our Commitment to Your Health

Quality hearing care requires ongoing professional expertise and support. The ENTOne team of Doctors of Audiology provides comprehensive care that supports not just your hearing, but your overall cognitive health and well-being.

Next Steps

The team at ENTOne is available to answer any questions you may have about the health of your ears, nose, and throat. Contact ENTOne to schedule an appointment.

Disclaimer: This is general information and not a substitute for professional medical advice. All advice and suggestions offered via the website or newsletters should be discussed with a physician before implementation. Always consult a physician for specific guidance, especially if you have pre-existing conditions. SurgOne, PC, and ENTOne PC are not liable for any adverse reactions that may occur by implementing advice or suggestions that appear here.

What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus (pronounced tih-NITE-us or TIN-uh-tus) is the perception of sound from an internal source so other people cannot hear it.

Tinnitus, often a ringing sound, is estimated to affect 10 to 25% of adults and even some children to some degree. For some, tinnitus may improve or even disappear over time.

The causes of tinnitus are unclear, but most people also have some degree of hearing loss. Tinnitus is rarely associated with more serious medical problems. And it is usually not severe enough to interfere with daily life. Some people, however, find that it affects their mood and ability to sleep or concentrate.

While there’s no cure for tinnitus, there are options to manage and reduce its symptoms. From sound therapy devices to behavioral therapies and medications, options are available to help you lead a more comfortable life. This knowledge can instill a sense of hope and reassurance.

What Are the Symptoms of Tinnitus?

The symptoms of tinnitus vary significantly from person to person. The sound heard may ring, buzz, roar, whistle, hum, click, hiss, or squeal. The sound may be soft or loud or low or high-pitched. It may come and go or be present all the time. Most Tinnitus cases are subjective, meaning the sound the individual hears is not heard by others.

What Causes Tinnitus?

While the exact causes of tinnitus are still unclear, tinnitus has been linked to the following:

Noise Exposure – Many people experience tinnitus after exposure to loud noises. Because of the loud noises they may have experienced, tinnitus is also the most common service-related disability among veterans.

Hearing Loss -Tinnitus is associated with aging or exposure to loud noises. Some people with hearing loss do not experience any tinnitus at all.

Medications—Tinnitus can be a side effect of certain medications, especially when taken at high doses. Medicines that trigger tinnitus as a side effect include non-steroidal or anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin), certain antibiotics, anti-cancer drugs, and antidepressants.

Earwax or Ear Infection – Earwax or fluid from an ear infection can block the ear canal and trigger tinnitus.

Head or Neck Injuries – A head or neck injury can cause tinnitus.

Treating Tinnitus

Treatment for tinnitus is individualized for each patient at ENT One. All of our new ear patients see one of our Otolaryngology providers as well as one of our Doctors of Audiology for their first appointment. Dr. Kristen, Dr. Maureen, and Dr. Liz are doctoral audiology professionals specializing in diagnosing and non-medical treatment of hearing loss, tinnitus, and balance disorders. They enjoy collaborating with our otolaryngology partners to provide fantastic whole-person care.

Rest assured, with this level of care at ENT One, you will determine a care plan depending on whether an underlying health condition, hearing loss, environmental factors, or a mixture of all causes your tinnitus. Examples of whole-person health treatment at ENT One that may occur if you receive a tinnitus diagnosis may include but are not limited to:

Earwax removal – Our Otolaryngology Professionals, Laurie Burns, and Jordan Troka, are celebrated for their gentleness and exceptional care. Removing earwax blockage can decrease tinnitus symptoms.

Treating a blood vessel condition—Underlying blood vessel conditions may require medication, surgery, or other treatment to address the problem.

Hearing aids – If your tinnitus is caused by noise-induced or age-related hearing loss, hearing aids may help improve your symptoms.

Changing your medication – If your medication appears to be causing tinnitus, your doctor may recommend stopping or reducing the drug or switching to a different medication.

Behavioral Modifications – Discuss treatment options that may reduce symptoms and support your holistic care.

The Doctors of Audiology at ENTOne were voted Littleton’s best of the best for Audiogical Care and Hearing Aid Support, Purchase, and Consultation. Contact ENTOne to schedule an appointment with our excellent audiology specialists.

DISCLAIMER: Remember, this is general information and not a substitute for professional medical advice. It’s crucial to discuss any advice or suggestions with a physician before implementation. Always consult a physician for specific guidance, especially if you have pre-existing conditions.

It’s that time of year when Colorado’s aspen trees burst into a sea of gold in our beautiful Rocky Mountains.

Viewing fall colors, also known as “leaf peeping” can be enjoyed by anyone – whether it’s by hiking, biking or car.

One of our favorite leaf-peeping drives is Guanella Pass Road. The 11-mile stretch between Georgetown and the Mount Bierstadt trailhead provides spectacular leaf peeping without leaving your car.

You’ll see bright reds, yellows and oranges, contrasted by the greens of aspens, willows and evergreens, along with plenty of vistas around every switchback.

Don’t miss the view of Mount Bierstadt and Mount Blue Sky (formerly known as Mount Evans) from the parking lot at the top of the pass, which has an elevation of 11,600 feet.

Why Are My Ears Plugged?

Ear problems are one of the most common medical complaints of airplane fliers and travelers to high elevations.

What Happens?

When the eustachian tube in your middle ear is blocked due to altitude or pressure changes (sometimes called barotrauma), air cannot be equalized, and a vacuum occurs. This stretches the eardrum and causes pain and occasionally fluid.

What Are Treatment Options?

The simplest way to help clear your ears, when flying or at high altitudes, is to swallow. Yawning, chewing gum, or sucking on hard candy can help. You can also try pinching your nose, taking a mouthful of air, blowing gently (not forcefully) against your pinched nose, and then swallowing. You’ll know if it worked when you hear a pop, and your ears feel less plugged.

If these conservative ear care measures don’t work, come see us at ENTOne. Please don’t refer to Google or Instagram for quick fixes.

If your ears fail to open, or if you are experiencing persistent pain in your ears, seek the help of an ENT specialist or otolaryngologist – such as the experienced team at ENTOne.

Disclaimer: This is general information and not a substitute for professional medical advice. All advice and suggestions offered via the website or newsletters should be discussed with a physician before implementation. Always consult a physician for specific guidance, especially if you have pre-existing conditions.

For many of us, summer months mean more active time outdoors. Which can also mean more time plugged in to personal listening devices. Exposure to excessively loud sounds, such as music or other audio inputs, can cause irreversible damage to the delicate structures within the inner ear. Over time, this damage leads to a gradual decline in hearing ability, making it increasingly difficult to understand speech, enjoy music, and fully participate in daily activities.

Young People Are At Risk

The risk is particularly high for young people, whose recreational habits often involve spending extended periods in environments with dangerously high noise levels.

Hearing Loss Prevention Is Simple

However, simple steps can be taken to mitigate this threat. Wearing high-quality earplugs or noise-canceling headphones when exposed to loud noises, keeping the volume on personal devices at a moderate level, and taking regular listening breaks can all go a long way in preserving your precious sense of hearing.

By taking proactive measures to protect their ears, you can safeguard your ability to fully engage with the sonic world around them for years to come.

ENTOne Audiologists Can Help

The audiologists at ENTOne are medical professionals trained and certified in all aspects relating to hearing. If you have questions about your hearing abilities and/or your exposure to noise-induced hearing conditions, contact ENTOne. Our audiologists will spend time with you to determine the type and degree of your hearing loss.

Over the counter (OTC) hearing aids hit the market in the past couple of years. Several brands have jumped into the market by selling direct to consumers online.

Cheaper Hearing Aids Is Rarely Better

While the cost can be lower, there’s a reason for that…OTC hearing aids are a one-size-fits-all solution. OTC hearing aids are designed for patients with mild to moderate hearing loss, are limited in their maximum output, and have less premium sound quality. As a result they are rarely the best option for many patients.

Customization Is The Difference

While OTC devices are adjustable, they are not programmable to your unique hearing needs. Prescription hearing aids are programmed just for you by a skilled professional. A trained audiologist or ENT physician will ensure proper fit, programming and even pair the device with your phone.

The Benefits of Professional Assistance

An audiologist is a licensed, certified professional who specializes in helping patients with hearing loss. Audiologists have access to screening, technologies and solutions customized for you. When you’ve made the decision to consider hearing aids it’s always preferable to work with a pro.

Hearing Health = Overall Health

Hearing health has a significant impact on overall health. Hearing loss is often associated with balance problems, falls, social isolation, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cognitive decline. An audiologist can help connect the dots between your hearing health and your overall health.

ENTOne Is Here For You
